Those East Timorese....

A team of scientists in East Timor have recently discovered that mosquitoes can detect and are attracted to traces of alcohol in the victim’s bloodstream. On locating such an individual, a mosquito will emit high frequency sounds and engage in a particular flying path which attracts other mosquitoes. The degree of intensity of the high frequency emissions is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol present in the victim’s blood stream. Somehow the mosquitoes have realized that humans in an inebriated state cannot hunt them effectively.

Excited by this discovery, the team is trying to determine the practical uses of the same. Although they remain early days, the prospect of using this unique ability to check levels of alcohol in persons seems to be one which holds the highest potential in terms of economic returns. The team, however, has clearly stated that it is too early for any definite statements and they shall soon resume their tests and studies.

Could not sleep a frikkin wink the other night. Seemed like an entire city of mosquitoes had decided that it was time to feast on me. Definitely heard some high pitched sounds during the night. Hmm……
